Splinter - The Place I Love (1974)
Finally managed to track down one of the LPs that formed the soundtrack of my youth. Splinter was a British duo — Bill Elliott and Bobby Purvis — signed to George Harrison's short-lived Dark Horse label, and 'The Place I Love', their 1974 debut and the best of their three DH albums, features classy pop in the mould of Stealers Wheel, Badfinger and, to a lesser extent, the Beatles. Produced by Harrison who also makes some splendid instrumental contributions, with terrific support from Alvin Lee, Billy Preston, Gary Wright, Jim Keltner, and Klaus Voorman. Most of the songs were written by Purvis, with Elliott getting co-writing credits for 'China Light' and 'Costafine Town', the set's highlights. The vinyl-to-MP3 (192kbps) conversion is quite good so hurry if you want a fast freeload.
